Vaping Vocabulary

“What did they just say?”

There are a lot of terms that have developed amongst users of e-cigarette/vaporizers since the devices have come out. Here’s a few of the basics to get you started. Learning some of the terms for the batteries and burners can help you decide which type of vaporizer is right for you.

Atomizer
This is the portion of the electronic cigarette hardware that heats water based solution into a vapor. This is where the filter on a traditional cigarette would be found. In addition to using an atty to vaporize your solution, you can also use a cartridge, or a cartomizer.

Cartridge
A cartridge or “cart” is where the filter on a traditional cigarette is located.  It is a molded, plastic cartridge containing polyester filling material and e-juice for an electronic cigarette. A cart does not contain a burner and must be used with an atomizer. A blank cart is one with only filling material, and no e-juice; this allows you to control what goes in your cartridge. Most cartridges can be refilled.

Cartomizer
A cartomizer is the combination of a cart ridge and an at omizer… put them together and you have a cartomizer. This is also found where the filter of a traditional cigarette is located. A cartomizer has the heating element inside the poly filler and contains the water based solution that is vaporized. A blank carto is one with only filling material, and no juice; this allows you to control what goes in your cartomizer. Cartomizers can be refilled several times before the atomizer or poly-fiber begins to give out.

Clearomizer
A clearomizer is also a “burner” found where the filter of a traditional cigarette is located. It contains a heating element that is kept moist with the use of wicks. The clearo does not contain polyfiber. Simply a heating coil with with wicks and juice. Because there is no poly-fiber the units are easier to clean and maintain.s allows you to control what goes in your cartomizer. Cartomizers can be refilled several times before the atomizer or poly-fiber begins to give out.

Battery
The battery “bat” is the portion of the e-cigarette that resembles the tobacco filled portion of a traditional cigarette.  Bats come is several sizes and shapes for different vaporization needs.  They are protected lithium ion batteries and besides disposable electronic cigarettes, they can be recharged over and over again.

Drip, Dripping, Juicing
This is a technique many use to apply the e-juice to their e-cigarette in which the solution is dripped directly onto the atomizer.  This method typically uses the least amount of e-liquid but requires the user to re-juice their system every couple of “cigarettes” worth of vaping.

Drip Tip
A drip tip is a mouth piece that can be easily removed and replaced.  It is used with an atomizer and was designed to allow the user to drip e-liquid through the drip tip and directly on the atomizer.  Some drip  or “juice” directly through the drip tip.  If you choose this method, be sure to blow or tap the drip tip so that the e-juice gets to the atomizer.  Many people choose to pop off the drip tip, juice the system with a couple of drops, and then pop it back on.

E-liquid or E-Juice
The water based solution used in an electronic cigarette that contains distilled water, PG, VG, flavoring, and nicotine (levels range from 24mg to 0mg).

Propylene Glycol or “PG”
The main component of e-liquid used in e-cigarettes is Propylene Glycol  or “PG”. There is much research on inhalation of vaporized PG. There are studies on PG dating back to the 1940’s. In fact, it has been used extensively in situations where it would be inhaled in the US since the 1950’s. It has been used in medical devices such as asthma inhalers, as an air disinfectant in places like hospitals and restaurants, and even in hundreds of thousands of entertainment venues such as bars and theaters, since it is the substance used to create fog in fog machines.

VG, Vegetable Glycerin
Food-grade vegetable glycerin is 99.7% pure, with the remaining 0.3% being water. It has a sweet taste, but is metabolized differently than sugar and does not raise blood sugar levels. Glycerin is used in foods marketed as being low in carbohydrates to keep them sweet and moist.

Vaping
Vaping is the act of using an electronic cigarette which resembles the act of smoking.

Vaper
One who vaporizes is a Vaper and hopefully no longer a Smoker.

Vaporizer
Since many e-cigarettes no longer resemble traditional cigarettes, they are often referred to as vaporizers or PV’s, which is short for personal vaporizer.
